Mexico City suits professionals, creatives, families and remote workers who want a global city with deep local identity. It works best when home and recurring destinations share one transit corridor; it is a weaker fit for people sensitive to altitude or air pollution, or unwilling to plan for seismic risk.
Why CDMX earns a long stay
The capital combines major employers, universities, specialist hospitals, museums, food and performance at a scale few regional alternatives match. Official city guidance reflects its many distinct boroughs and neighbourhoods rather than one central tourist zone. Residents can build a highly local week while retaining the opportunities of a metropolis.
The price of that scale is friction: long cross-city trips, noise, variable air, water pressure and construction. The high-altitude basin also requires an adjustment period for some newcomers. A move is strongest when tied to the city's genuine cultural or professional advantages, not only fashionable cafés.
Choose a colonia by routine, not reputation
Roma and Condesa provide parks, restaurants and easy social entry, together with premium demand, nightlife and seismic scrutiny for older buildings. Juárez is central and energetic. Polanco offers corporate, retail and school access at higher prices, while Del Valle, Nápoles and Escandón can deliver more residential streets with useful central connections.
Coyoacán and San Ángel suit historic, slower southern routines but can create a difficult northern commute. Santa Fe serves its business district and newer housing while remaining road-dependent. Walk the exact block after dark, test the office journey and check nearby venues, street drainage and construction before signing.
Use the integrated network intelligently
Metro, Metrobús, trolleybus, Cablebús and other city services form an extensive integrated mobility network, supplemented by cycling and ride-hailing. Coverage is a major advantage, but peak crowding, maintenance and final-mile safety vary. Use current official maps because routes and temporary works change.
A home within a comfortable walk of two useful options is more resilient than one dependent on a single road. Test late-evening access and airport timing as well as the weekday commute. Driving adds parking restrictions, congestion and local vehicle obligations that should be understood before importing or buying a car.
Seismic and water checks belong in every viewing
Ask the building's age, structural history, damage and repair record, evacuation procedure and assembly point. A cosmetic renovation is not evidence of structural assessment. Check stair access, alarms, gas shutoff and whether heavy furniture can be secured. Understand the official earthquake alert rather than relying on a phone app alone.
Water supply can vary by building and district, so ask about cisterns, pumps, scheduled interruptions and recent outages. Test hot water, fibre, mobile signal, street noise and natural light. Verify deposit, guarantor or insurance requirements and the landlord's authority before transferring funds.
Residence and work are distinct
Mexico's official temporary-resident route covers qualifying stays over 180 days and up to four years, with grounds including economic solvency. Consular evidence and thresholds must be checked with the office handling the application; requirements are not safely inferred from another applicant's nationality or appointment.
A residence card does not automatically settle permission for Mexican remunerated work, payroll or tax. Mexican employment offers involve the National Migration Institute. Overseas remote workers should document their actual arrangement and obtain advice on residence, source of income and local business activity.
Altitude, air and rain affect the week
Allow a gradual first week at altitude and seek medical advice for concerning symptoms. Mexico City's environmental authority publishes current air-quality information; use it to adjust outdoor exercise, especially if asthma or cardiovascular conditions matter. Indoor filtration and window sealing vary widely between apartments.
Seasonal heavy rain can flood underpasses and expose building leaks. Keep official alerts active, identify two routes home and store documents and medication accessibly. Earthquake drills, a small household kit and a meeting plan are normal capital-city preparation, not alarmism.
Specialist depth is a major advantage
CDMX has an extensive public and private healthcare market, but insurance networks, waiting arrangements and emergency capability differ. Choose a nearby emergency department and a separate planned-care provider. Confirm whether a policy pays directly or expects reimbursement and how pre-existing conditions are treated.
Families should place school and commute before an apartment aesthetic. A successful trial stay includes a peak Metro journey, a wet evening, a grocery run and a medical route. The city's rewards become far easier to reach when ordinary obligations stay within one side of the metropolis.
